On February 3, 2025
, at approximately 1415 hours, I, Deputy Wahman (403), responded to [4000 BLOCK] HWY 23 Lot [REDACTED] for a follow-up regarding case number 2025
05381. Burke County DFACS, represented by Mrs. [REDACTED], was also en route for a follow-up investigation.
Upon arrival, I activated my department-issued body-worn camera. Mrs. [REDACTED] and I attempted to make with the owner, Brittany Coleman, by knocking several times and announcing our presence. There was no response; however, I could hear a child screaming inside the residence with no audible sound of an adult present. Due to these circumstances, I requested a secondary unit.
Deputy Plueger (S-1) and Sgt. Benjamin (B-9) arrived on the scene at approximately 1438 hours.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to make , Deputy Plueger, Sgt. Benjamin, and I made entry into the residence due to exigent circumstances. Upon clearing the residence, we located a juvenile in distress and another juvenile asleep on the couch with a bottle in hand. No parent or guardian was present.
The male juvenile, identified as [JUVENILE ] (8 months old), was found in a baby chair in the center of the living room, screaming and crying. Based on my time on scene, I determined he had been in distress for a minimum of 20 minutes.
The female juvenile, identified as [JUVENILE ] (1 year old), was found asleep on the edge of the couch with two bottles nearby. She was flushed in the face but was alert and oriented once woken.
After securing both juveniles, deputies exited the residence, Shortly thereafter, the juveniles’ mother, Brittany Coleman, arrived from what appeared to be another residence on the opposite side of the park. Ms. Coleman stated she had only been gone for 15 minutes. I advised her that I had been on scene for at least 20 minutes without observing any adult supervision in the .
Further investigation determined that both juveniles had been left unattended for an unknown period of time. The male juvenile exhibited signs of distress, and the female juvenile had been left in an unsafe position on the edge of the couch with a bottle in her lap. While on scene, deputies observed in plain view a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana located outside the residence. Additionally, inside a bedroom within the residence, deputies observed another glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine, along with two torch lighters. After observing the paraphernalia, this information was relayed to the on-site DFACS representative, Ms. [REDACTED], for further documentation and case assessment.
Burke County EMA personnel responded to the scene and evaluated both juveniles. After assessment, both children were taken into custody by Ms. [REDACTED] with Burke County DFACS for further care and placement.
Ms. Coleman was placed under arrest for cruelty to children in the second degree. She was handcuffed behind her back, double-locked for security, and ed incident to arrest. She was then placed in the rear of my patrol vehicle, secured with a seatbelt, and transported to the Burke County Detention Center without further incident.
